Yashadama refers to the small fruits of the deciduous tree called Japanese alder. As approximately 40% of these fruits consist of tannin, they have been traditionally used for black dyeing. The fact that Yashadama is mentioned in the "Manyoshu," an ancient Japanese poetry collection, indicates its use dates back over a millennium.
