Mr. Yamazaki is a professional botanical dyer and owner of a dyeing studio called "Kusakiya" located in Gunma prefecture. His grandfather was famous as a dyer who revived botanical dyeing in Japan and his Katazome works are very popular in Japan. If you are interested, please notify us through this Google Form. |
Schedule
30 min - Introduction and Prepare
Introducing the teacher, the tools and the dyes. Then, the teacher will tell you how the workshop will be.
90 min - Carving the stencil paper
Four copies of the pattern are pasted onto four sheets of stencil, which are then carved into molds. You will learn how to carve the stencil by Mr.Yamazaki.
90 min - Making paste resist from rice
Learning what is paste resist and choosing stencils and mking Katanori including using steamers after his explaining the recipe of Katanori
90 min - Workshop of Katazome
Let's do putting paste resit on the stencil papers and fabric. While drying it, we will give you Q&A session and then we will dye the fabric with indigo. Finally, please wash it and remove the paste.
