Teacher: Sae Kaneko

Aikuma Japanese Dyes is excited to offer a new workshop course where you can dye your own scarf using Shibori, a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique. With roots going back over a thousand years, Shibori involves folding, twisting, or tying the fabric to create unique patterns—no two pieces are ever the same.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll create a beautiful, one-of-a-kind scarf that reflects your creativity. We also offer scarf sizes and materials suitable for use as a hijab, making this course accessible and welcoming to Muslim participants.

Whether you're new to dyeing or looking to explore Japanese culture in a personal way, this workshop offers a memorable and creative experience. Come and enjoy the beauty of tradition, with a modern twist.

It has been developed in Japan since the Edo period (1603-1868) and is known for its exquisite techniques, such as “Kyo-kanoko” in Kyoto. One famous technique is “Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori,” which is a traditional craft of Aichi Prefecture and developed under the protection of the Owari Clan 200-300 years ago. Even today, the tradition continues, incorporating new materials and techniques.

This workshop will let you know the basic skills of Shibori and you will make your own Scarf or Hijab with your creativity and kind support from Ms Kaneko.
