Summary
Hikizome (引染め) is a brush-dyeing process to dye the entire fabric evenly with this Hikibake (引刷毛) brush. During this process, we normally use Shinshi (伸子) and Harite (張手) in order to keep the fabric strained.
Prepare
Washing the cloth well is important. If necessary, the cloth is sewn together to form one long piece of cloth before dyeing. This is called "Hanui (端縫い)." After that, please prepare Hikibake, Harite, and Shinshi. For Hikizome, use a dye liquid several dozen times more concentrated than normal.
Process
①Ji-Ire (地入れ)
This process is performed to ensure uniform dyeing and to acclimate the fabric. This page explains how to do Ji-ire in detail.
②JI-Zome (地染め)
Dyeing is done by moving the brush from the right to the left of the fabric. Do this quickly and firmly to avoid unevenness. Be careful not to touch the brush to the area where the paste resist has been placed.
③Shiage (仕上げ)
Finally, run the brush over the entire surface again so that the dye solution is evenly distributed. Also, do this from the other side as well, so that the dye is beautiful and even. At that time, also be careful not to touch the brush to the area where the paste resist has been placed. Do Shiage at least twice.
After drying naturally, Hikizome is finished!
